Legal showdown looms: Fed up with Cambridge regs that kill plans for new housing, developers eye potential lawsuit
Housing starts have slowed to a trickle in Cambridge, pushing already sky-high prices and rents even higher.
The construction collapse comes several years into a city mandate that 20 percent of units in new residential projects be rented or sold at below-market rates.
Now a prominent local developer is weighing legal action, saying that Cambridge affordable housing regs have made it all but impossible to build in the city.
Patrick W. Barrett III, a Cambridge real estate lawyer and developer, said he is considering suing the city over its 20 percent mandate, saying it effectively represents an illegal property taking by the city.
